Hello, and welcome to the Academic Resource Center!

Our mission here at the ARC is to support continued academic growth among all Sweet Briar students. Whether you’re looking for someone to assist you with a current writing project, work with you on structuring your study time, help you get comfortable with classroom technologies, or mentor you through the demands of a rigorous academic schedule, the ARC can help you take control of your own educational experience.

We believe that learning is a dynamic, interactive process rooted in discovery. Rather than simply correcting your errors or telling you what to do, our peer tutors will confer with you individually to help you reach new insights about your writing and assist you in determining the study habits that will be best for you.

We work with students at all levels and from every discipline, and we offer assistance with reading, writing, study skills, time management, stress management, and ePortfolio/Digication. Additionally, we can put you in touch with tutors from any department on campus (chemistry, French, mathematics, etc.) We also assist students who need special accommodations. Our goal is to help you acquire the tools and develop the habits of thinking that will allow you to succeed in an academic environment.

Tutoring Sessions in Writing

Many students who visit the ARC come to discuss papers for their classes. We believe that all writers need careful readers with whom they can converse about their writing, and we work hard to provide that resource. You can bring in a paper at any stage—it doesn’t matter whether you’re still brainstorming ideas or polishing your final draft. During any given session, you may find yourself engaged in a variety of activities—brainstorming, free writing, outlining, reverse outlining, drawing concept maps, reading your paper out loud, etc. Your tutor will work with you to find the methods that make the most sense for your paper and for you as a writer.

We know you'll find the ARC a bright and friendly place, and we look forward to working with you and helping you make the most of your time at Sweet Briar.
