Class of 2012, new faculty welcomed at Opening Convocation

At opening convocation on Wednesday, Aug. 27, students, faculty and staff welcomed the Class of 2012, new members of the faculty and two Fulbright scholars to Sweet Briar College. Eighteen returning students also were recognized for scholastic achievements.After an invocation by Chaplain Adam White and the introduction of new faculty by College President Elisabeth Muhlenfeld, Jonathan Green, dean of the College, took the podium. In his remarks (see full text), he encouraged students to embrace responsibility and “do right.”

Sweet Briar College’s 2008-09 Babcock Season opens Monday, Sept. 15 with classical Indian dancer Padmarani Rasiah Cantu. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Murchison Lane Auditorium at Babcock Fine Arts Center. A complimentary reception will follow.

At first glance, Kara Walker’s silhouette, “Emancipation Approximation,” pictures a Scarlet O’Hara-type woman, hoop skirt and all, leaning casually against a stump. As your eyes move over the large-scale piece, however, it takes on a more sinister tone. Severed heads of African-American slaves lie scattered at the woman’s feet; an ax leans menacingly against the stump.

Sweet Briar’s Carrie Brown is finalist for literary award – again

Carrie Brown, an associate professor of English at Sweet Briar, is one of three finalists for the 11th Annual Library of Virginia Literary Awards in the fiction category for her novel, “The Rope Walk” (Pantheon Books). It’s a familiar place for Brown, who is now a four-time finalist and two-time winner of the prize.

SBC Archaeologists awarded medals for work in Republic of Kazakhstan

Husband and wife team Claudia Chang and Perry Tourtellotte, archaeologists and members of the Sweet Briar College community, were honored recently for their work in the Republic of Kazakhstan. Chang, a professor of anthropology, and Tourtellotte, an independent archaeologist, were each presented two medals on July 1.

Campus police officer Erica Scott recently completed instructor training in the Rape Aggression Defense System, also known as RAD. Held July 7 through 9 at Liberty University in Lynchburg, the training focused on teaching law enforcement officers to train women how to protect themselves from attackers.

Fletcher family comes full circle, holds reunion at Sweet Briar

On a hill overlooking Sweet Briar College’s two lakes, moss-covered fieldstones lay seemingly at random, encircled by a grove of Ailanthus altissima, commonly called the tree of heaven or paradise tree. Much like their placement, the size and shape of the rocks are not uniform, and here and there, if you look closely — if you crouch down and scan the shady expanse like a detective looking for clues — there are subtle depressions in the earth.
