Virginia Association of Museums Director to Speak at Sweet Briar

Margo Carlock, executive director of the Virginia Association of Museums, will be the guest speaker at the annual joint meeting of Sweet Briar College’s Friends of Art and Friends of the Library. Carlock will present “Museums as Community Spaces” at 8 p.m. Friday, March 27 in the Wailes Lounge at the College’s Elston Inn & Conference Center. Admission is free and the public is welcome.

As executive director of the association since 1994, Carlock directs planning, marketing, production and evaluation of its programs. She is responsible for its annual operating budget, fundraising and grant acquisition, in addition to overseeing membership recruitment and retention. She also advocates for the needs of Virginia’s museum community.

Carlock serves as chair of the Virginia Cultural Network, chair of the steering committee of the National Alliance of State Museum Associations, and on the boards of the Chesterfield County Historical Society and the Southeastern Museums Conference. In 2002, she received the SEMC’s Outstanding Service to the Museum Profession Award.

Prior to her post at VAM, she was assistant to the director of the Missouri Division of Aging and a foreign service officer with the U.S. Department of State. She has a bachelor’s degree in history and a Master of Arts in history and museum administration from Southern Illinois University, and attended the Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago.
