Latest Generation of Sweet Briar Campus School Artists Burst onto Scene

| March 13, 2008

“It’s Not Elementary XVIII,” an annual exhibition of artwork by preschool and kindergarten students at the Sweet Briar Campus School, will open with a reception from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, March 20 in the College’s Benedict Gallery. The show, which is free and open to the public, will run until May 18.

“Me in My Yard” by kindergartener Mary-Brenna E. Sherwood.

The Sweet Briar Campus School provides a laboratory setting for college students in the early childhood education and child development programs. It also offers quality, developmentally appropriate early education for 4- and 5-year-old children from Sweet Briar and the local community.

The young artists’ enthusiasm for the show — evident in the riot of colors and heartfelt scenes with titles such as “My Mom and Me” and “A Cow Eating Grass” that typify the works — has made it a perennial hit with parents and regular Sweet Briar galleries patrons for 18 years. For the past three years it’s also provided an educational opportunity for an SBC arts management student.

The students organize the show from start to finish to meet requirements for an introductory arts management course. Shayna Sharp ’11 was this year’s student curator. She worked under the supervision of SBC galleries registraral assistant Nancy McDearmon, who noted that all three students who have worked on the show were in their first or second year of college.

“Outer Space” by kindergartener Elijah Tomlin.

McDearmon, an artist who formerly taught in public schools, believes that is significant because the students experience early on how an art exhibition is put together. “If you want to learn about museum work, how better than to start immediately,” she said.

Gallery hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Monday and Friday and 1 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. For more information, contact Rebecca Lane, Sweet Briar art galleries director, at [email protected] or 381-6248.
