Business Students ‘Spread the Love’ with Carnation Sale, Plan Spring Events

For most Sweet Briar Students, Thursday night means heading down to the Boathouse for a party. For the Spring 2009 Business Management Lab, however, Thursday, Feb. 12 meant staying awake until 2 a.m. compiling “carnation grams” for delivery the next day.

That night, the Grammer parlor was littered with flowers, sales logs and empty soda bottles, as caffeine was required in great amounts, but team members Laura Mooza ’12, event planner; Emily Maycock ’12, marketing and public relations; Desiree Williams ’12, accounting and donations; and teaching assistants Michelle Anderson ’11 and Nikki Taylor ’10 worked until the job was done.

The “Carnation Celebration” took place February 9 through 13. Hosted by the Business Management Lab, the event brought a fun activity to the Sweet Briar community and raised funds for Amherst Habitat for Humanity.

Leading up to the event, the team posted fliers and handmade posters across campus, advertising the sale with the slogan “Spread the love this Valentine’s Day” emblazoned on the front.

Throughout the week of the event, the team had a table in Prothro Dining Hall, where students could purchase carnations for $1 per flower and write personal notes to their friends and faculty.

In addition, the team trekked across campus Monday through Wednesday nights visiting dorm rooms and Faculty Row for door-to-door sales. Finally on Thursday, the team compiled the carnation grams, and on Friday morning they were delivered.

Because the team sold only about 470 carnations of the 600 purchased, they decided to hold a final sale in Prothro on Friday, Feb. 13, with the carnations marked down to 75 cents.

This was somewhat successful, but the team still had too many flowers left. Luckily, Kevin Phelps, director of dining services, stepped in and saved the day. Phelps purchased every remaining carnation, and then donated them to Prothro Hall. His generosity and community spirit remind the team of what Sweet Briar is all about.

The lab would like to thank Phelps and the Sweet Briar community for the success of the “Carnation Celebration.” The team sold all 600 carnations and, after covering the cost of the flowers, made $271 in profit to donate to Habitat for Humanity.

Upcoming events hosted by the Business Management Lab also will involve Alexandra Herrera ’12, event planner; Lindsay Arnett ’12, marketing and public relations; Emma Rakosky ’12, accounting and donations; and teaching assistants Sara Sheppard ’10 and Jesse Leiner ’10.

At 8 p.m. Friday, April 3, there will be “Date Night in the Dell,” with Josey Dining Room as a rain location. Sweet Briar students can bring a date, or just a friend, for a bonfire and movie screening. The bonfire and movie are free and refreshments will be sold.

On Thursday April 9, you can “Pie Your Professor” from noon to 1 p.m. in Prothro Hall. Students will purchase tickets and participate in an auction, where they can bid to throw a pie at the professor or staff member of their choice.

The final event of the spring is the popular “Battle of the Bands.” From 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Friday, April 17, students will gather in the Dell, with Prothro Hall as a rain location, to enjoy the sounds of local bands.

The lab has partnered with the campus Habitat for Humanity Club to sell Habitat for Humanity T-shirts before the event. There also will be a raffle, and tickets will be given to those who purchase a T-shirt.

Proceeds from all the spring Business Management Lab events will benefit Amherst Habitat for Humanity, which is trying to build its 27th house in the Amherst area this spring. Look for fliers, e-mails and Facebook groups for updates about upcoming events.
