Spring concerts feature Broadway hits and student compositions

| April 21, 2014

The Sweet Briar Chamber Orchestra and all three choirs will close out a busy month of spring events at Sweet Briar College, with the orchestra taking the stage at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 27, in Memorial Chapel, followed by the choirs at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, in the same venue.

Jeff Jones directs the orchestra during the dress rehearsal for “Brundibár.”

Both concerts are free and open to the public.

After a busy year collaborating with the Performing Arts Division on two innovative productions — a dramatic reading of “War of the Worlds” in the fall and the opera “Brundibár” earlier in April — orchestra director Jeff Jones said it was time for something different.

“As much fun as these productions have been, it’s time to feature new works composed or arranged by Sweet Briar students, as well as small ensemble works selected and directed by our students,” he said. “So, we’re throwing a potluck of sorts, a Stone Soup concert.”

It will be the orchestra’s second ‘potluck’ since Jones took the lead in 2012 — the first in the series was last year’s spring Chamber Orchestra Concert.

Once again, each student will have the chance to contribute her own ideas to the mix, making the concert an exciting learning opportunity for everyone involved.

Two days later, Broadways songs such as “Wicked,” “Chess” and “Rent” will entertain listeners during the annual Spring Choir Concert, performed by a total of 75 students in the chamber and concert choirs and the eight-singer troupe Octavo. Anna Billias will accompany the singers on the piano.

“The students have enjoyed singing the Broadway repertoire,” said Sweet Briar vocal instructor and choir director Marcia Thom-Kaley.

The concert will also include film favorites “Let The River Run” and “Frozen,” among others.
