Three riders advance to IHSA nationals

Kathryne Richard ’15 (from left), Sarah Hibler ’14, Katie Drake ’14, Hannah Bowers ’15 and Olivia Smith ’14 represented Sweet Briar in the IHSA Zone 4 finals. Drake, Hibler and Smith will compete in the national finals.

Sweet Briar is sending three riders to compete in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National Championships.

Following their performances at Zone 4 finals on April 6, Kathleen Drake ’14 and Sarah Hibler ’14 both qualified to advance to the nationals in Harrisburg, Pa., May 1-3. They will join senior Olivia Smith, who will be competing as the Cacchione Cup rider from Zone 4, Region 2 for the second year in a row.

The Cacchione Cup is named for IHSA founder Bob Cacchione. Smith will join riders from all over the country to compete for the honor of being the top IHSA hunter seat individual rider at the national championships.

To get to the IHSA nationals, Drake earned the novice flat championship while Hibler claimed the championship in intermediate fences in the zone finals.

In addition, Hannah Bowers ’15 finished fourth in walk, trot, canter; Kathryne Richard ’15 finished fourth in novice fences; and Smith finished sixth in open fences and fifth in open flat.
