Holiday Pops, Vespers warm up seasonal festivities

| December 2, 2013

The Sweet Briar music department will perform a Holiday Pops Concert at 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, in Memorial Chapel, followed by the College’s annual Christmas Vespers service at 7 p.m.

Sweet Briar choir singers perform during the 2012 Vespers service.

The concert program offers a holiday music celebration featuring members of Sweet Briar’s three choral groups. The program includes holiday standards such as “Jingle Bells,” “White Christmas” and “Winter Wonderland.” Song sheets will be provided so audience members can sing along.

Sweet Briar’s traditional Vespers service of nine lessons and carols will follow the pops concert, with Chaplain Dori Baker officiating. Vespers also will feature the singing and orchestra groups, and musical selections will include the Nigerian hymn “Ogo ni fun Oluwa!” (“Glory to God in the Highest!”), as well as annual favorites such as John Rutter’s “Candlelight Carol.”

All are welcome to attend both performances. Admission is free. A dessert party in the Wailes Lounge at the Elston Conference Center will follow Vespers. For more information, please email Marcia Thom at [email protected] or Amy Payne at [email protected].
