‘Holiday Pops’ Warms up Christmas Lessons and Carols

| November 28, 2011

The Sweet Briar Choir will perform a Holiday Pops Concert from 5:45 to 6:30 p.m. before the College’s annual Christmas Vespers service at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4 in Memorial Chapel.

The pops concert program includes a jazz arrangement of “White Christmas,” and beloved favorites such as “Carol of the Bells” and “Deck the Halls,” says choir director Marcia Thom.

Thom said her student singers wanted a venue to perform holiday “pops” music, in addition to the Vespers service. Combining the two in back-to-back concerts is an opportunity to present both popular and sacred Christmas music.

Sweet Briar’s traditional Vespers service of nine lessons and carols has long been an annual rite on campus and in the surrounding community. This year’s program will include works by John Rutter as well as songs that originate from countries around the world, Thom said. Featured soloists will be Stacy Ludington ’12, Sadé Fountain ’15 and Alex Grobman ’12.

All are welcome to attend both concerts. There is no admission charge. A chocolate party will follow in the Wailes Lounge at the Elston Conference Center. For more information, please email Marcia Thom at [email protected].
