Phillip C. Stone, the former president of Bridgewater College and a highly respected Virginia attorney, officially became the 12th president of Sweet Briar College today, assuming the reins of the liberal arts college shortly after the College’s new board of directors convened at 5 p.m. to elect a new leader.

Stone’s ascension to the College’s presidency capped a four-month battle over the school’s future, a fight that Stone said offers powerful lessons that can help ensure an unending future for Sweet Briar.

“We saw over the past four months the tremendously fierce commitment Sweet Briar alumnae have to their beloved alma mater,” Stone said. “That resource was not sufficiently leveraged when it was most needed, but thankfully their support was able to help save the day for one of America’s greatest liberal arts colleges.”

The first meeting of the new Sweet Briar College Board of Directors was held by conference call with board members dialing in from around the country. Yet today’s election of Stone as president was still felt physically on campus. Shortly after 5 p.m., several faculty and staff members rang the College’s historic bell to signal the dramatic change in leadership that not only ushers in a new president but an entirely new board of directors.

As the sound of the College bells echoed across campus, the Sweet Briar College website also signaled the change in leadership with this message from President Stone to the Sweet Briar community.
