Private colleges host open houses

| July 15, 2013

Sweet Briar is one of about two dozen colleges and universities inviting high school students and their parents to participate in the 2013 Virginia Private College Week from Monday, July 29, through Saturday, Aug. 3.

The annual open house is hosted by member institutions of the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia. It is offered as a cost- and time-efficient way for prospective students to visit several of the state’s private institutions in one planned trip.

Like other independent colleges in Virginia, Sweet Briar provides all the educational benefits of public colleges and universities, plus the advantages of small, student-centered liberal arts and science programs. Those advantages include high student-faculty interaction, access to equipment and research options almost from the day students arrive, greater leadership opportunities and personalized attention. Those who participate will also discover that private colleges are more affordable than many people think.

For each individual, finding the right fit is key to a successful college experience, and visiting the campus is an important step in the college search. Every school has a distinct personality and feel, which can best be understood by experiencing the physical environment and interacting with current students, faculty and staff.

Virginia Private College Week also saves money in the application process. Those who visit at least three campuses will receive three application fee waivers that may be used to apply to any CICV member college.

Sweet Briar’s sessions will be held at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily through Friday. Only the morning session will be offered Saturday. Optional tours of the riding center also will be available at 11:15 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Each session will begin with a tour of campus and include an overview of the distinctive aspects of a Sweet Briar education, as well as information on admissions and financial aid.

Reservations are strongly recommended but are not required to visit Sweet Briar. For questions, or if you are unable to visit during Virginia Private College Week, please email [email protected] or call (800) 381-6142 and the staff will be happy to schedule a visit at another time.
