Sweet Briar’s Onyx Club Hosts Fall Gospel Fest Nov. 16

| November 10, 2008

Onyx, a student club that promotes minority growth and diversity at Sweet Briar College, will host its second Fall Gospel Fest at 6 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 16 in Memorial Chapel.

The event is a fundraiser for the organization, which re-emerged under the name Onyx last year. It had formerly been called Unity.

Onyx president Jasmine Toliver said the groups invited, which include the Bolling Hill Mass Choir of Madison Heights and the Ferrum Gospel Choir of Ferrum College, bring a mix of contemporary and traditional gospel styles. Toliver, who is a member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Senior Choir in Amherst, plans to perform solo during the festival.

Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. Proceeds will benefit Onyx activities, including community service work. Onyx members also are raising money to fund a trip to Washington, D.C., for the National Black Student Leadership Development Conference in January.
