What Should I Bring?

NOTE: You are required to bring and use a fluid-proof mattress pad and a power strip with surge protector.

Every student has different needs and different lifestyles. However, here is a list of items most students just can’t live without:

  • Social security card

  • Certified original birth certificate (required if planning to work on campus)

  • Voided check for bank account (if you hope to work on campus and prefer check deposit)

  • Waterproof mattress pad that zips/closes (required)

  • Power strip/surge protector (required for computers)

  • Sheets (standard twin)

  • Pillow, comforter and blankets

  • Calendar/organizer

  • Shower caddy and shower shoes

  • Alarm clock

  • Batteries

  • Flashlight

  • Bike, tennis racket, softball glove, etc.

  • Desk lamp

  • Small fan

  • Basic first-aid kit

  • Umbrella

  • Wastebasket

  • Portable vacuum

  • Hangers

  • Bulletin board

  • Backpack

  • Stationery

  • Extension cord

  • Toothbrush holder

  • Towels and washcloths

Also, please remember that the following items are not permitted:

  • Pets (except fish and turtles)

  • Candles and incense

  • Toasters (or any open flame or coil)

  • Coffee pots or any cooking appliances (Keurigs are permitted)

  • Microwaves



Remember that all appliances, extension cords, power strips and other electronic devices must bear the UL seal of approval. The following items are not permitted:

  • Sunlamps

  • Clip lamps

  • Halogen lamps

  • Air conditioners

  • Microwaves (the only exception are approved MicroFridge units, which you can obtain from Melvin Corporation)

  • Hot plates

  • Electric frying pans

  • Immersion coils

  • Any other similar cooking or heating devices

  • Space heaters

Each hall has a central kitchen available for student use.

You may bring other appliances (televisions, Keurigs, stereos, clocks, radios, fans, hair dryers, etc.) for your room.


Portable refrigerators are permitted in your room if they do not exceed 4.5 cubic feet, 80 lbs. in total weight, and don't require more than 240 watts of electricity in normal operation. Separate microwave units are not allowed in your room. For your convenience, the College allows students to rent approved MicroFridge combo units from Melvin Corporation.

Power Strips and Extension Cords

Power strips and extension cords are allowed on campus. Power strips/multi plugs must have a built in surge protector and if you bring an extension cord it must be heavy duty and should be plugged into a power strip with a surge protector.

Bed risers, lofts and other customization

For safety reasons, students may not use loft beds. Bed risers are permitted (up to 7"). Only one set of risers is allowed per bed and only for beds that are not bunked. Altering residence hall rooms is prohibited.
