About the Outing Cabin
The Outing Cabin is a primitive cabin with no running water and no electricity. The outfitting of the cabin is also primitive with only a table, chairs and matressless bunks. The cabin can only be accessed by hiking. It is a 1/4-mile uphill hike in order to get to the cabin from where you can park your car. The Outdoor Program can provide sleeping bags, sleeping pads, stoves, pots and pans, water jugs and other materials you might need for your stay in the cabin.
Reserving the Outing Cabin
Do you need to get away from campus? Maybe have some “alone time,” or maybe even some time with your girlfriends? Then stop in our office to reserve the cabin for a night, a weekend or a week! We will set you up with complimentary gear you will need for your stay.
The Sweet Briar Outing Cabin was built in the 1930s by Sweet Briar students who wanted a restful place away from main campus for a weekend. Today, students use it for the same purpose; it is a rustic retreat in the woods that students, faculty, staff and their guests use as an enjoyable getaway.
Getting Outing Cabin Certified
There will be an opportunity for students to become Outing Cabin-certified this fall. It will take place from 3-7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24.
